Do You Compare Yourself to Others? And Does It Make You Feel Down?

I sometimes find myself comparing myself to others. And yes, it can make me feel down. During those moments, I tend to focus solely on what I lack. I admire the things I don’t have and spiral into a mindset where I start believing that lacking those things makes me somehow inferior or miserable. This happens to me often, even now.

But that’s okay. It’s important not to panic or force yourself to fix everything in that moment. These emotions, like waves, come and go. They are transient, so it’s essential not to blow them out of proportion.

Others may possess what I don’t, and I might have things they lack. My individuality—what makes me uniquely me—is something that no one else possesses. And that is enough. There is no need to win, and there is no need to lose.

Just as someone else’s grass may appear greener, there may be someone out there who sees my grass as greener. But so what? What matters is whether I enjoy my own grass. And I believe journaling can help with that. Through journaling, I can thoroughly uncover my own luck and blessings. I can dive deep into my present experiences and extract the good in them. This practice is fascinating.

It’s fine to compare yourself to others sometimes, but remember that your own life is interesting, too. Why not explore it more? Life is short, after all. It’s better to enjoy playing on the patch of grass you already have. Life might even be too short to fully appreciate all that we possess, so spending too much time feeling down over comparisons is truly a waste.

So, to anyone feeling down due to comparisons, I want to say: don’t let it rob you of your joy. Your own story is worth savoring.
