It’s easier to see others than it is to see ourselves.
Why? Because we can only see ourselves through a mirror—never directly.
That’s why learning to look at yourself—gently, honestly, and with love—is so important.
One powerful way I’ve found to do that?
Dress up, take photos of yourself, and choose the ones you love.
Look at them. Really see yourself.
It may sound simple, but this small act can actually lift your spirits.
A Spark from Someone I Know
I first realized the power of this when I saw a Chinese acquaintance had set a photo of herself as her smartphone wallpaper.
That surprised me—in a good way. It was a new idea. A fresh perspective.
So I tried it too.
And I discovered something surprising:
Looking at yourself can be calming.
Looking at yourself objectively, yet kindly—that’s the key.
You Deserve Your Own Kindness
I’ve always been someone who sees the good in others.
I notice it easily, and I can express it freely.
But when it came to myself…
I realized I wasn’t doing the same.
So now, I try to treat myself like I would treat another person.
I’m struggling. I’m doing my best. And that alone is amazing.
If someone I cared about were going through what I’m going through, I would say such gentle, loving words to them.
Why not say them to myself too?
Talk to Yourself with Compassion
I know my own pain better than anyone else.
I’ve lived it. I’ve carried it.
So what if I said this to myself, while looking at my own reflection, or a photo of me?
“You’ve been through so much. And you’re still trying. That’s something to be proud of.”
Yes, do that.
Speak kindly to yourself.
You deserve it—just as much as anyone else.
