The Book That Helped Me Rediscover Myself: Richard Brodie’s Life-Changing Guide

The Book That Helped Me Rediscover Myself: A Life-Changing Guide to Personal Transformation and Self-Discovery

When I discovered Richard Brodie’s book, Microsoft Wordを開発した伝説のプログラマーが発見した「やりたいことの見つけ方」がすごい! (which translates to The Legendary Programmer Who Developed Microsoft Word Shares the Secret to Finding What You Really Want in English, though this is not the official English title), I immediately recognized that it was a keeper—a book worthy of being preserved for a lifetime. I read it on Kindle and purchased it without hesitation.

I stumbled upon this book during a period when I was devouring self-help books. While self-help books often provide temporary solace, I found that they had an addictive quality; I felt I needed to keep reading them to avoid slipping back into my old, downcast self. This cycle led me to stop reading them altogether. But this book is different—it’s not just another fleeting self-help read.

This book is extraordinary. Each page captivated me, lifted my spirits, and by the end, I felt reborn. It was more than a mere mood boost—it prompted a fundamental reassessment of my life. Reading it was like peeling away layers of accumulated ‘fog’ that had built up over the years. By the time I finished, I felt as if I had been reborn, my inner self illuminated as if life had just begun.

As I made my way through the book, it encouraged me to pick up a notebook and pen and follow along with the exercises it suggested. These lessons are truly transformative and something everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime to discover their true selves. Thanks to these exercises, I was able to reconnect with my authentic self.

Although I first tried these exercises several years ago, I still remember how impactful they were. The joy and sense of revelation I felt from learning about my true self are memories that have stayed with me. I often revisit the notes I took during this period (back when I used a paper notebook), and each time, I am reminded of how profound that session was. It remains one of the most high-quality, eye-opening journaling experiences of my life.

This book is one of the few I wholeheartedly recommend. Every time I read it, it fills me with a sense of hope and brightness. For me, many self-help books tend to have a somewhat gloomy undertone, but this book stands apart. Just looking at its cover brings a sense of lightness and positivity. It’s truly a beacon of hope and carries an exceptionally uplifting aura.

I was curious about whether an English version of the book existed, so I looked into other books by Richard Brodie. Since the version I read was a Japanese translation, I’m not entirely sure which English title corresponds to it. However, I found one that seems promising, and I’m considering diving into it as well.
